When Cape Town's inhabitants want to escape the city, many head for Plettenberg Bay.
Sandra McGregor joins the exodus.
Plettenberg Bay's pristine beaches draw such crowds that the town's population swells to nearly four times as many during the

"I'll let you in on a little secret," says the waitress as she refills our coffee. "Though Cape Town may get all
the attention, this is where South Africans come to play." But frankly, judging by the number of people I see
walking around Plettenberg Bay barefoot, wearing little more than bathing suits and touting picnic baskets
and inflatable dolphins, it's not much of a secret. At least not in South Africa.
Located in the Western Cape along the popular Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay's pristine beaches draw
such crowds that the town's population of 44,000 swells to nearly four times as many during the summer
months of December and January.
Yet despite a little international recognition, few visitors from outside Africa ever make their way to this
picturesque town. Fewer still ever venture beyond the beaches to explore what are some of South Africa's

most commanding coastline vistas and the largest remaining tract of indigenous forest in the country.
Lack of international renown, I'm discovering, is not necessarily a bad thing. Despite the focus here on
beaches, even Plett's (as the town is locally known) most popular ones, such as Robberg or Central, are
never overcrowded outside the Christmas period; the only creatures I see competing for space are a group
of house-hunting hermit crabs fighting over an empty seashell.
"Welcome to South Africa's version of Fort Lauderdale," says Russell Katzenberg as he helps us aboard his
river ferry, soon to depart for a leisurely cruise of the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. Though we are only
a few minutes' drive from town, this greeting seems out of place amid a pristine river system and the
surrounding verdant forest, with the only raucous behaviour coming from some nearby ducks who seem to
be involved in a mating ritual.

As we glide serenely along the river, flanked by some of South Africa's last remaining old-growth indigenous
forest, Russell expertly describes the region's geology and animal life, and confirms that the Plettenberg Bay
area is as much a draw for nature lovers as it is to those who come for the beaches and bars. He explains
that, as a central fixture on the Garden Route (a drive renowned for its lush forests, diverse vegetation,
lagoons and ocean views), the town's Fort Lauderdale vacation vibe is tempered by the hikers,
eco-adventurers and adventure fans who come to explore the region's overwhelming expanse of natural
beauty. Visiting the region is perhaps best described as Club Med meets Mother Nature.
Later that day, as if to confirm Plettenberg Bay's standing as an ecotourism hot spot, I meet a group of

amateur ornithologists only too happy to list the birds they saw at the nearby Tsitsikamma National Park (the
Knysna Loerie being the big prize). Another of the protected areas found in the region, the park is crisscrossed
by miles of trails (including the Otter Trail, regarded as one of the best hiking trails in South Africa),
rocky ravines and secluded valleys.
The birders' excitement is contagious, and I decide that some birdwatching may be in order. But I take the
easy way out. A 15-minute drive from town is The Crags.
A kind of condensed version of the region's ecological offerings, it affords those of us with only faint outdoors
leanings the chance to explore the environment.
At Birds of Eden, the world's largest free-flight aviary, more than 3,000 birds fly unfettered within a massive
3.2-acre dome filled with indigenous trees and plant life. No binoculars are needed to spot hundreds of birds,
from the ubiquitous ring neck doves to the rare and shy Knysna Loeries. It's beginner birding at its best.
Here, I meet a group of students on vacation from Stellenbosch University who, misjudging my sense of
adventure, invite me to join them bungee jumping at the nearby Bloukrans Bridge, the highest bungee jump
in the world.
I politely pass and opt for the more subdued version of adventure offered next door: going for a walk in the
company of more than 400 primates at Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary. Here, I am joined by a small group
of fellow adventurers and a guide who, carrying nothing but a walking stick, leads us through a 12-acre
enclosure among curious spider monkeys, bellowing gibbons and laid-back lemurs. "They're just like the
visitors who come to Plett," says our guide pointing up the pathway to a group of lemurs, "they love to
worship the sun."
Ahead of us are almost a dozen of the charming creatures, all vying for a share of sunbeam, eyes wide,
arms raised as though in worship.
Of course, no creature quite encapsulates the taking-it-easy ethos of Plettenberg Bay as do the languorous
felines found at Tenikwa Wild Cat and Wildlife Sanctuary (where visitors are allowed in the enclosures of
most of the wildcats), another of the wildlife experiences to be found at The Crags. Or if you're not a cat
person, the nearby elephant attraction or snake sanctuary may suit.
The next attraction up is a more "agrarian" sort at Bramon Wine Estate, the most easterly winery in the
province. After filling up on some lovely sauvignon blanc and tapas at the winery's restaurant, I have just
enough energy to make plans to go for a long hike among Tsitsikamma's many gorges and exquisite rare
yellowwoods. But then I think again and change my mind, deciding to hit the beach instead. My lovely new
hiking boots never make it out of the box.

From Cape Town, it’s approximately a six-hour drive to Plettenberg Bay. Alternatively, SAA also offers
connecting flights to George (the nearest airport to Plettenberg Bay, which is about an hour’s drive) from
Cape Town or Johannesburg.

Getting around
The best way to get around Plett itself is on foot. However, renting a car is the easiest way to visit the

The inside track
The Otter Trail is regarded by many as South Africa’s best hike. The trail takes five days and four nights.
Paths take you along both the coastline and through old growth forest. The numbers of hikers allowed on the
trail is limited so reservations are mandatory and are known to book up over a year in advance. However, for
those less hardy hikers, a one-day hike is available. For information and to make reservations, visit

The Plettenberg Bay region keeps adventure sports enthusiasts very busy. Try the world’s highest recorded

You can get great deals on local, handmade crafts at the Plett Market on Main in central Plettenberg Bay

The region is also home to Mitchell’s, one of South Africa’s most popular craft breweries. Based in Knysna,
the brewery offers tours and tastings; buy some bottles to bring back and enjoy the taste of the region from

A casual if occasionally boisterous place to dine; the food is dependably delicious and cheap. Two people

A favourite among locals, this restaurant boasts both great food and a superb location, with an open-air

Worth the 18-mile drive to the nearby town of Knysna, this French café and bakery is open for breakfast and

A recent photograph showing how to shoot pictures in low light. A tripod is essential to minimise camera shake. A long shutter speed of 2 seconds was needed to get a correct exposure as it was so dark. I used the rule of thirds to aid composition and also made the most of the various diagonal lines which are very strong compositional aids. Beautiful light, beautiful architecture, beautiful location- this is why I am a photographer!

Shot in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. I used a tripod with a cable release and mirror-up. The exposure was several seconds, hence the tripod allows the picture to be sharp. Use a small aperture like F11 for extended depth of field. It also allows the water to blur and become misty. Shot with a Nikon DSLR D2x and medium telephoto of 100mm.

This image was shot at the recent firework competition in Blackpool, Lancashire.

I knew from a previous attempt that the fireworks would be small and hidden behind the pier so I first shot the pier and beach how I wanted it to appear with a 24mm wide angle and then moved under the pier and shot the fireworks separately. I later merged the different images using Layers in Photoshop.

Tamron focus problem, 90 mm AF F2.8 macro

Well, I have never written a post complaining about a company before but feel I have to voice my opinions on this particular matter. I purchased a Tamron 90mm AF F2.8 macro lens in the USA while visiting my parents who live there. The lens was fine at first-excellent quality sharpness but very poor AF-slow, clunky and noisy-just what you need when shooting timid wildlife close up!! The build quality is somewhat plasticky compared to my old Tamron 90mm (not AF or auto exposure). On a recent trip to France it suddenly stopped focusing from approx 20ft to infinity. I emailed Tamron USA with pictures showing the problem, even adding shots from my old Tamron 90mm lens to show it was the lens and not me nor the camera.
There response was to suggest I didn't know how to focus my lens properly- I only have 25 years experience behind a camera (15 as a pro) so what do I know?!! I sent them an email saying such and have since had no reply from them. What appalling after sales service, what an appalling lens! I am a firm believer that you only really get to know a company when things go wrong. My recommendation is to steer clear of this lens at all costs and any other Tamron lens. If you have a problem you are well and truly scuppered. I have noticed many other complaints about Tamron so I suggest you do a little Googling for your own research. I have always been a fan of Tamron lenses but now feel completely let down by their poor customer support. Have you had any bad experiences with Tamron?

Here is a deceptively tricky job removing the drainpipe from this lovely street in Honfleur, France. It needed the use of several different tools including the lasso, polygonal, healing brush, clone stamp and several layers. The work had to be done in stages as the pipe was not straight. Here is a great idea for replacing a bad sky in a picture. There are many times when you come across a great shot but the weather is against you. In the film days it was shoot and weep but with digital we can now replace elements within the picture to create a new, dramatic shot. I replaced the cloudy sky with a blue sky with clouds. These shots were taken on a recent photography workshop in Kent and West Sussex run by Tim Gartside. Thanks to Andrew and Greg for making it a great day out. The weather was on our side and we managed to get some great shots in great locations. The highlight was probably Lancing College Chapel which just blew us away with its size and ornate splendour. Have you ever had this problem?

"could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found"

Just happened to me and the answer is hopefully simple to cure. It would seem that a file extension is incorrect. EG. you think you saved it as a .PSD but it has become a .JPG. The file looks ok and you can see it but it won't open. Don't know why it happens but the wrong extension causes a conflict. Simply go into Photoshop or your chosen software and go File > Open, select your image file and choose 'open all readable documents' or if that fails, try opening it, one by one, with your most popular extensions like a .PSD or . TIFF or .NEF or .CAF etc if it is saved as a .JPG or vice versa. IE. file name is "landscape.jpg" try changing the extension to "landscape.psd" or "landscape.tiff" etc etc.

Urban night photography workshop

Why not try an urban photography workshop? You can get some amazing shots. Here the fog and snow have created extra atmosphere adding to the impact of the shots. Yes, that is me with an umbrella adding the human element! Self timer on 20 seconds and running into the shot to pose!! That was my exercise for the day! You must use a tripod and self timer or cable release for maximum sharpness. Although I normally advocate shooting during the crossover light period of dusk when there is still a dark blue sky, on this occasion the fog allowed me to shoot when the sky had gone black. In fact, the low cloud added the red effect by bouncing light back down from the street lighting.

Taken on a recent photography workshop I added a darker sky from a darker shot in a bracketed series of three shots. The technique is fairly time consuming and involves copying an RGB channel layer and creating a mask from it. The second exposure is then imported as a new layer and the mask is used to create a selection which is then used to copy the darker sky on its own layer. Phew!! I was quite pleased with the final result though. Yet more snow falling and again the world is plunged into a photographers paradise-if only I could get the car up that hill I know there is a shot waiting for me!!

These shots show how a tripod, although heavy to carry around, allows you to get some interesting long exposure effects. The camera will not create camera shake when attached to a tripod-the cause of many ruined photo's. For some extra fun I unlocked the tripod head so I could move it about during the long exposure of 10+ seconds which resulted in the beautiful abstracts you can see.

Yet another trip to Disney-has to be done with a 4 year old daughter! Expensive but worth it. Got some nice shots there so that was an added bonus. The firework display behind the castle is just great.

Well, just been away to Naples, Florida to visit family. I was going to blog while away but it helps if you take your password!!! Here is the first shot off the production line which is a beautiful sunset of the pier. Everyone goes to watch the sunset and clap when the sun disappears below the horizon. Wish you were there? Me too!! Every day. It is so peaceful and relaxing watching the sunset. Will post some more shots soon. Sunset karma to all!

Photography workshop, Snowdonia, Wales

Just finished a photography workshop in Snowdonia. Thanks to all who attended-Phil, Charles, Alan and Linzi. Also to Ze on a previous workshop. We had mixed weather but managed to make the most of all the different weather conditions thrown at us. It is amazing how you can find a suitable subject depending on the weather. Even on rainy days we shot waterfalls and detail shots that most people would walk past without even noticing. Photography is often about the little details not just the grand view of the landscape. Here are a few pictures that will hopefully show you about finding little corners to photograph. They are often more rewarding than trying to shoot the 'big picture'.

Well, It has been a while-apologies for that. I have been working on a new website for my stock photography -www.stockshooter.com- which still has a lot of work to do but I am pleased so far. Quite honestly I am annoyed at Alamy, my principal stock library, as they keep failing my shots for 'lacking sharpness' at the QC stage and quite honestly it has become such a joke and so time consuming to deal with them I have set up my own website!
This is a shot from my latest workshop with Phil. We had a lovely sunny day which makes a change for England! This is the final shot of the day when we set up our tripods at Trafalgar Square and for once we weren't harassed by security guards who are getting so out of control it is becoming a nightmare to shoot in London these days. I have even been harrassed in a lavender field in the middle of nowhere. People are just not friendly to photographers these days. Ah well.

Took this a few days ago-thanks Steve! Had an amazing time walking through these giant sunflowers. A wonderful farmer had planted several fields so spent most of the day and sunset shooting almost 2 x 8Gb cards! Not often you get to see sunflowers in this country so a rare treat. Brighton, Sussex and Scotney Castle, Kent Photo Workshop

Sorry it's been a while since my last blog. Here are a few shots taken on a recent workshop with Simon. We went to Scotney Castle, Kent and ended up in Brighton, Sussex for the sunset and had an interesting encounter with the local Hare Krishna who were chanting on the beachfront. Brighton is always great for photography, there are always new ways of seeing it. It's amazing how different a shoot can be in the same place when the weather is different. We were blessed with dramatic storm clouds but also some sunshine - a wonderful mix for landscape photography! I have created a sepia style B&W version which works really well.

Lavender field photography workshop kent

Took Derek, from good old South Africa (my wife's homeland) on a one day workshop and started off with these lovely lavender fields in Kent. The weather was very mixed with torrential rain and sunshine-perfect to get some dramatic shots with a little patience! Photography really is about waiting for that magical moment along with plenty of patience. It doesn't always have to be sunrise or sunset either, this was shot about 10.30 - 11.00 AM.

Poppies in Kent

These poppies were shot last week near to where I live. Apparently they only appear now and again so I was lucky and fortunate enough to visit them on several occasions. Enjoy these special events and remember to book early June in your diary to go poppy hunting!

What a memorable and amazing experience! The Virgin 747 flew by really slowly and at low altitude giving a fantastic photo opportunity-oh yes, and the Red Arrows were in formation behind it!! Great airshow, one of the best I have been to.

These were some shots taken on a workshop I did a while ago in London. It is one of the most exciting places to do night photography. I am doing one to one workshop tutorials and also small groups. The Canary Wharf shots really show why it is so worthwhile sticking around after the sun has gone down. Wait at least 20 minutes after sunset for the sky to darken and then keep shooting until the sky has gone black to guarantee success.

Snowdonia Photography Workshops 2009

I will be doing some 3 day weekend workshops in beautiful Snowdonia, Wales. We will be stopping in a quaint cottage very close to Caernarfon and Anglesey, right in the centre of Snowdonia. Dates and prices can be found below but please contact me if you wish to have further information on workshops in this beautiful part of the world.

The workshop dates will be;

September 18 / 19 / 20

October 2 / 3 / 4

The cost will be £275 each and includes workshop tutorial on each day and 3 nights accommodation.

This price is normally for a 2 day workshop so gives you an extra day of free workshop tuition!

You should arrive on the afternoon of 17th September or 2nd October.

During the first evening we will do a night shot of the amazing Caernarfon Castle as an added free bonus.

The next three days will be spent shooting at different locations including Anglesey. There will be some walking but nothing too strenuous.

We will discuss many camera techniques in depth including techniques like HDR, night photography, composition, colour, filters and exposure control.

Cost does not include any insurance, travel to/from accommodation, food or any other additional expenses incurred on the workshop.

Please bring with you all camera gear (film or digital), warm clothing and a good pair of boots. If you have a laptop please feel free to bring along as well.

We will endevour to look at peoples work and offer a critique and also discuss post production workflows using Adobe Photoshop/Elements/Lightroom/Capture NX, particularly if the weather is bad.

Spring bluebells

Here are some of my bluebell shots. I tried some more experimental abstract studies and I am quite pleased with the results. They look more like paintings than photographs. I used a longish exposure of about 1/4 sec and panned the camera down during the exposure, following the dominant vertical tree lines. I tried shots at different shutter speeds and also different panning speeds. The slower ones seemed to yield nicer results but it's all good fun experimenting.

Going off to find some bluebells over the next week or so. Have been messing about with Painter x on some spring shots. It is a very interesting program allowing some amazing artistic effects although you do have to work hard at it to get the best results.

Boats at Hastings

Just finished teaching an interesting workshop down in Hastings with James where we photographed the boats pulled up on the shore. Took some shots at sunset but the best were the night shots which we painted with flash during 3 minute exposures using the 'Bulb' setting. Got some really amazing shots which were much nicer than I thought they were going to be. It goes to show if you work hard any location has the possibility of yielding good photographs. The dead fish were an 'interesting' prop!

It's Friday the 13th-spooky!
Well, the day has been quiet so far but still time for an axe murderer! Just been to Snowdonia to do a workshop with Linzi and her clan. Great time, great company and great place. Some beautiful landscape in Snowdonia and we had an amazing experience where we got lost in a forest while photographing a beautiful sunset on Anglesey but luckily had a full moon and a grizzly bear to ask for directions. Good job it wasn't the 13th! Here are a few shots.

Been very busy retouching my Cuban photo's and still loads more to do! Post production is damned time consuming. Had a bit more hassle with my computer. If you transfer data from one Apple to another it can mess up serial numbers. I lost my Aperture serial number but because I had proof of purchase they gave me a new one. Viva Cuba!

Just got back from 7 days in Cuba-thanks Steve and Fan! It was great to be with you. Hope it's not too cold in Canada Fan!! A special hello to Shannon too! Havana is great, a photographers heaven. There are simply photo's on every street corner. The old architecture, the vibrant people, the 50's American Classic cars, sunshine and narrow streets all add up to great photo opportunities. It was remarkably safe, yes a few people wanting money but they never got heavy when none was forthcoming and always had a smile on their faces. The main problem was the car exhaust pollution (old Russian engines) which was quite nasty and a bit annoying but not enough to put me off going again, hopefully real soon.
Definitely recommended to go. It is changing and 'beautiful' decaying streets are being renovated (for the better in my opinion) but don't worry it will take many many years to finish. Now just got 60Gb worth of cards to wade through!

apple mac problems

Well, I've just got my computer back from Apple. What a fiasco! The dvd superdrive has failed twice before and after 2 weeks in 'hospital' they brought it out and it failed again in front of the manager. Fair enough they did refund the entire amount and I ended up buying a new computer and screen and they were very sorry and in the end helpful but Apple are not reliable anymore which is bad news considering the high cost of purchase. A friend also had a problem and the shop said before Intel processors were fitted they never had one back for repair but now get loads back. I just don't see it being economically viable anymore. Perhaps 2 pc's next time-one as a backup would make better business sense? My beautiful old G4's are now obsolete thanks to the swap to Intel processors and Adobe not supporting them with CS4.
Oh for the old film days when life was so much simpler!! I spend more time on IT than on my photography now!

visit to the Natural History Museum, London

Had a delightful trip to the Natural History Museum yesterday. Really interesting place to visit for photography and learning. The architecture, especially the details are beautiful. Had a hard drive failure, (my backup's backup!) so I am pulling my hair out at the moment. I am now burning huge amounts of dvd's which I have concluded is the safest way to archive. Never had a dvd failure in 10 years. So I now have 2 copies on hard drives and dvd disks also. It's a pain but necessary. One day solid state technology will be so comforting.
Anyway, a few more photographs- these have been manipulated in Photoshop using Layers and Blend Modes. It's good fun experimenting and the foggy trees are part of an ongoing series, some of which can be seen on my website.

workshop holiday to bryce, zion, utah and monument valley

Working on a trip to Mid-West USA for next May 2009. I will be going to Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley, Canyonland, Antelope Slot Canyon and Arches. Did a similar trip last year and it was an amazing experience so next year I am hoping to take a few people on a photo holiday with a workshop type feel to it. Well today I have just sold a mounted fine art picture showing the Seven Sisters at Beachy Head on the South Downs, England. This was a beautiful evening and was well worth the trip to the seaside. My name is Tim Gartside and this is basically my first ever blog so be gentle! I am a professional photographer and have been working for different companies and eventually myself for twenty years. After doing a one year art foundation course in sunny Blackpool, I then went on to do a three year BA(Hons) degree in Graphic Design at Maidstone College of Art. I have worked for reprographic companies, interior photography companies and eventually became self employed twelve years ago shooting interiors for property companies and estate agents.
